So sad that Mom Beale has left us. It has sent so many great memories flooding back from Zim days in the Beale home. I will always remember the warmth of her welcoming smile and her unconditional acceptance of me as Nic’s friend Davo as she called me. Bless you all as you mingle joy with your grief as you say goodbye and celebrate who she was and still remains!

Darling Weansie, Alan, Nick and Robin, ( and families)
As long as I have known you Weans - I knew your mom. She and wonderful, funny Jo ( with the sore handshake) just welcomed and loved me. She was mom to so many and she adored you all. I can hear her voice as I write. I can only imagine how you will all miss her - she had a godly wisdom and salty sweetness that can never be replaced. Always grateful - always content- always trusting Jesus. What a giant spirit we have lost. Love you Aunty Wyn.

Dear Rowena, Even though I only had the opportunity to meet your mother late in life - her spirit and kindness touched everyone who met her. She was always interested in what people had to say and had a cheeky twinkle in her eye. I appreciate having had that small opportunity - and she has passed that charming character on to you as well. Love xoxo Christel

I had a special special relationship with Aunty Wyn. She was my other Mother. A wonderful caring, loving mentor and soul mate who cared for me, nurtured me, counselled me and rejoiced with me. For years I went to her home every Thursday for lunch. She loved my children and my husband.

The last time I spoke to my beloved Aunty Wyn was earlier last year. We told each other how much we loved each other and I thanked her for the influence she had in my life. She was old and deaf but we heard each other all right. We had unspoken feelings that transcended age and distance. We had an amazing bond.

Aunty Wyn Beale mothered & mentored me when I arrived in Cape Town at the age of 18 at the end of 1982. I spent many many weekends at the Beale home just outside Somerset West. When they moved, I continued to visit them until happily they settled in Fish Hoek. Every Thursday I would visit Aunty Wyn and Oupes for lunch. They were so loving and kind and interested in my life. I untangled many thoughts and ideas on their patio surrounded by fuchsias! I always said ‘when I grow up I want to be like Aunty Wyn!’ I’m actually still saying it! I spent almost an hour on the phone to her around her 90th birthday and was again reminded that when I turn 90, I want to be just like her. The secret of her happiness of soul and serenity of countenance was two fold – firstly, she knew and loved the Lord Jesus Christ and walked with Him all the days of her life. He has been her Rock and Foundation. Secondly, she was a brilliant optimist, always looking on the bright side of life.

I’ve always said, ‘when I grow up, I want to be like Aunty Wyn.’ Nothing has changed. I give thanks for every remembrance of her.

Isaiah 46:4

I will be your God throughout your lifetime–until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.

God never leaves us and we are not without hope.

To Alan, Jan, Robin, Linda, Nick, Carol, Weans and all the family, thank you for sharing your Mom with me. Who I am today is largely as a result of her influence in my life. She longed for each and every one of you to know the Lord and have a relationship with Him. She prayed for you all and loved you all very much.

Aunty Wyn, I Iove you and look forward to seeing you again.

  • Nina Beale: What lovely words Helga thanks so much. I too remember that patio filled with fuscias and we were also reminiscing about her curried eggs which no doubt you had a lot of if you went for lunch every Thursday! I know you were always very special to her
