Dr. Darrell Thomas Piersol of San Marcos, Texas passed away on February 24th, 2018, at home with family, at the age of 91. He was born March 5, 1926 to parents John and Mona Piersol in Muscatine, Iowa. He attended school in Milford, Illinois where his father was a music teacher and band director. He graduated from Milford High School in 1944. After graduation he enlisted at seventeen years of age in the Army Air Corps and served as an aerial gunner in a B-17 bomber near the end of World War II. After military service, he enrolled at Illinois Wesleyan University and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. A member of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity, he was active in campus life serving as president of his freshman and senior classes and vice president of the student government. He enrolled at Purdue University and received an MS and PhD in the newly formed academic discipline of Organizational Communication. Starting in 1956, Dr. Piersol spent approximately 26 years with IBM Corporation working in the manufacturing, engineering, and headquarters staff of the business. Prior to IBM retirement he held the position of IBM Corporate Director of Personnel Development in Armonk, New York. After IBM retirement, Darrell focused on a career in higher education and global consulting for government and business. He was a professor for Texas State University teaching Business Management until his retirement from teaching. During his tenure at Texas State, he acted as Director of the Governor’s Executive Development Program, Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, UT Austin. In 1989 he became the 15th recipient of the President’s Excellence Award at Texas State University. The award is presented by the Texas State President to individuals “who have brought special recognition to the University though significant contributions to society, their professions or the University.” He was active in his community, his church, and his university, Texas State. Darrell and spouse Barbara greatly enjoyed Texas State athletics, theater, and travel with friends. Darrell is survived by his wife Barbara, his children John Mark Piersol and spouse Stephanie Piersol of San Marcos, TX, Laurel Piersol and partner Steve Bard of Dallas, TX, and Heather Piersol Ahr and spouse Lonny Ahr of Castroville, Tx, grandchildren Michelle Piersol, Cydney Piersol and their mother, Pari Sandage, Cody Ahr, Cheyenne Ahr, and great-granddaughter Haevyn McCrummen. He is also survived by a number of friends who he loved very much.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos, TX.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Texas State University Catholic Student Center. Interment will follow at the San Marcos City Cemetery. A reception at the Price Center, 222 W. San Antonio Street in San Marcos will follow at 5:00 pm.
